PlayStation Skipping Pax East & GDC

With the PlayStation 5 approaching its release later this year, everyone is anticipating the announcement of any new info coming about the new console. Outside of a few blog posts and a logo reveal there hasn’t been much to talk about other than some patent and Devkit info and images being leaked.

It looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer for any new info as Sony has announced that PlayStation will have no participation in Pax East or GDC (Game Developers Conference) this year due to the ongoing spread of the Coronavirus.

Sony announced the news about Pax East yesterday in an update on their blog post.

Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the decision to cancel its participation at PAX East in Boston this year due to increasing concerns related to COVID-19 (also known as “novel coronavirus”). We felt this was the safest option as the situation is changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation in this event, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern.

The news about PlayStation’s decision to skip out on GDC (Game Developers Conference) came earlier today with a statement provided to Gamesindustry.biz from Sony.

Sony Interactive Entertainment

We have made the difficult decision to cancel our participation in Game Developers Conference due to increasing concerns related to covid-19 (also known as coronavirus). We felt this was the best option as the situation related to the virus and global travel restrictions are changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern. We look forward to participating in GDC in the future.

With the announcement of PlayStation’s non-participation in the events also comes the removal of many games that would be playable at booths (specifically Pax East) such as The Last of Us Part II, Iron Man VR, and Final Fantasy VII Remake. When we will have an update on certain games and info on the PlayStation 5 is unknown.

PlayStation 5 is set for release in Holiday 2020.
