Sea of Thieves feels like a game that has gone from the top to the bottom then back to the top again. I still remember the excitement around the game when it was announced back at E3 in 2015. Then after a delay back in late 2017, it took a while to come out after that first trailer. When the game was finally released on March 20, 2018, for Xbox & PC, it wasn’t received the best from fans and critics alike and many just wrote it off as a flop from Microsoft and the developer, Rare.
Two years later after significant updates, frequent content drops, and a willingness to listen to their community, Sea of Thieves has done a complete turnaround from where it was back in early 2018. In a blog post on the Xbox Wire, we learned just how great the Pirate action-adventure has been doing.
Joe Neate, Executive Producer at Rare
Summary
• Sea of Thieves has been played by more than fifteen million players since launch in March 2018.
• June 2020 was the biggest month so far for Sea of Thieves, with over 3.3 million players setting sail.
• Sea of Thieves has sold over 1 million copies to date on Steam since its launch on June 3, 2020.
As Neate said, it’s both thrilling and humbling to see the turnaround of this game, Congrats to the entire team over at Rare!
