In a strange turn of events, PlayStation has announced that they are forming a new partnership with Discord. The reason this is strange is that everything indicated that Microsoft had a lot of interest in doing something with Discord, and now Sony comes in and announces this.
In a PlayStation Blog post, President and CEO of SIE, Jim Ryan announced the news of the partnership
Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.
President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan
The blog post mentioned that Sony has made a minority investment in Discord’s Series H round. PlayStation is making interesting moves as of late, recently they purchased EVO (an annual esports event), and now this.
There will be more to share on further details in the partnership between PlayStation and Discord in the coming months before this experience launches in 2022.
